Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Brown Belt, Instructor, Metamoris Regional Champion, Ranked amateur MMA fighter
When did you start training in martial arts, and can you tell me a little about your story:
In November of 2005 I met a man who would change my life forever. Justin “Bacon” Hutter was an assistant wrestling coach at Waukesha South High School. He was a professional MMA fighter and a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at a time when that meant a lot, as there just weren’t very many ranked Jiu Jitsu practitioners around. I’d already been practicing martial arts my entire life, and grappling really made sense to me. It clicked for me, mentally. It just felt like a totally natural progression in my life for me to want to learn to strangle people! It seemed fun then, and I can confirm that it is still fun now! Go find a friend and strangle them. Trust me it’s an awesome experience.*
What do you teach at Pura Vida BJJ & MMA and tell us about your expertise in it:
I’m one of the grappling coaches at Pvida BJJ & MMA, and I emphasize “grappling” because, while Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is my specialty, it is only a piece of what I teach. My classes cover techniques I’ve found viable under various rule-sets and even under no rule-set in my 16 year grappling journey. I keep a very open mind when it comes to absorbing applicable grappling of all types, and I love to share that knowledge. Competition grappling is where technique meets mentality and aggression meets finesse. My goal is to tune the body to optimal performance, and sharpen the mind for victory.
